A fresh independent production house.

Who are we

Freestyle Films is a QLD, regionally based film production company, which essentially means thousands of incredible locations for filming at our fingertips without the traffic.

But it doesn’t stop there. We’re globally minded, locally grounded and committed to telling authentic stories that reflect the multi-faceted face of humanity. We chase after the stories that drive our hearts to action, stories that represent our world’s collective voices, perspectives and passions.

We could spray a bunch of fancy words and cute sentences that speak filmy prowess, but we won’t. Rather we’ll let you explore our site, check out our fun bios and peek at some of our work. Then if the vibes are high and the time is right, you can reach out and connect to us and say “Hi…”. In which case we’ll respond with, “Hey! How’s your day been? Up to anything creative or have some ideas you want to share?”

We won’t blow the smoke up your you-know-where by acting like we’re world class but we’ll also scrap the false humility and act like we’re just a lowly bunch of folk with a handy cam. (Although 90’s handy cams are pretty cool). We got gear, people with experience and a bunch of creative minds ready to play.

We can chat vision, concepts and development on any film project. Like our name suggests our style is free. Shorts, docs, features and anything else in between. No stuffy boxes to have to shove into at Freestyle. Let’s spread those wings and have some fun!

Amy Friesen

Amy Friesen

CO-FOUNDER | PRODUCER | PROVERBIAL UNICORN

With over two decades of industry experience coupled with some globe-trotting, Amy has a knack of creating safe spaces for communication and getting to the heart of the story. Always a forerunner, Amy works to bridge the gaps between the over-looked and the notably established in society and to find ways to connect and collaborate, creating provocative and meaningful work.

Bringing a strong writing ability to the table is another of Amy’s contributions to Freestyle and with a slate of award-winning shorts and docs under her belt, she is well-versed in that surreptitious art of storytelling, sharing her knowledge to this generations up and coming writers through teaching courses and running workshops.

Her warm, energetic and hype-girl vibe bring the energy up from start to finish on any project. But don’t be fooled – there is a laser focus in there to execute and ‘get it done!’

“I don’t know what’s more significant, my early years performing for Mum and Dad and their friends or bringing the comedy in high school, helping those anxious teens laugh away those blues. Either way I knew somewhere in there was an ability to inspire others and bring joy. This also translates into my deep passion for advocacy and telling the stories of the over-looked and unsung heroes. While journalism was nearly my career of choice, I found film was profoundly more impacting, personally and collectively, when it came to getting a message out there.”

Kevin Friesen

Kevin Friesen

CO-FOUNDER | DIRECTOR | 90’s RAP MASTER

With over 30 years of industry experience under his belt, Kevin has an unreal ability to encourage and direct people, bringing passion and enthusiasm to the set of every production.

His authentic, comedic and often times gladiator force drives productions to the next level and opens doors for collaborative depth and just some good ole fashioned fun.

“It’s hard to know when my love for film started, I mean easily from all the movies I watched as a kid, but somewhere between my rap group (24K – The Backstreet Boys of West Coast Canada) and a stunt course, I realised I loved being part of the entertainment industry. I loved being entertained and entertaining. I also discovered a had a deep love for helping people and as I took this into my travels and helping communities around the world I asked the question – can I do both? Can I bring my love for helping people and merge it with entertainment? Well, the answer to that is an undeniable yes!”

Kevin is here to help you make those films that inadvertently help people along the way, or at least make them laugh. After all…everyone has ‘that’ film, that helped us or inspired us to do something positive, love ourselves, make a change or reach out to others. And if he can do that in an action film with stuff getting blown up… even better!”
